Definition of GMO's: Genetically modified organisms (GMO) or genetically engineered organisms (GEO) is an organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. GMO's are the constituents of genetically modified foods.

A genetically modified food is a plant or meat product that has had its DNA artificially altered in a laboratory by genes from other plants, animals, viruses, or bacteria, in order to produce foreign compounds in that food. This type of genetic alteration is not found in nature, and is experimental.

Simply put, a GMO is what happens when genes from one species are taken and inserted into another to obtain a desired trait not seen in nature. For instance, scientists have spliced arctic fish genes into tomatoes to give them a tolerance to frost. Monsanto, the largest biotech company in the world, is the No. 1 maker of GMO's. Just like the fishy tomatoes bred to withstand cold, all GMO seeds are modified to meet various economic goals (regardless of health effects). The main traits sought by modification are: tolerance to herbicides and ability of the plant to produce its own pesticide.

The health risks of genetically engineered foods are unclear. Recent studies show that genetically engineering food can create new, unintended toxic substances and increase allergies, cancer risks, and other health problems, especially for children.

No, Thank you. We say “Grow your own!”.

Healthy Harvest Seed Company is proud to only sell NON-GMO free fruit, vegetable and herb seeds. Most being either heirloom, organic or open-pollinated.
